Fertility Preservation

Fertility Preservation

Transgender people have a number of options when it comes to fertility preservation. Individuals who are transitioning may choose to undergo procedures to preserve eggs or sperm before undergoing surgery so they may have a biological child in the future. This is an option for those who are currently on hormonal treatment, or who have not yet started this treatment.

Whether you are interested in fertility preservation, or assisted reproduction, the Utah Center for Reproductive Medicine has specialists who can fully discuss your options and help in decision making.

Transitioning From Female

Those transitioning from female may undergo preservation of eggs, or opt for eggs to be fertilized with sperm to create embryos. This process involves 8-12 days of injections and ultrasound monitoring prior to collection of eggs. These may later be transferred to the patient's uterus, a female partner's uterus, or a gestational surrogate in order to have a baby.

Transgender adolescents will be counseled by a team of professionals about their fertility preservation options and the ramifications of long term hormone replacement or surgery on their future reproduction.
