Research Statement
Dr. Gociman is currently running a large genetic research project, trying to identify the genetic component of multiple craniofacial anomalies. He has been awarded the Primary Children’s Early Career Development Research Grant and has been collaborating on this project with Dr. Robert Weiss in the Department of Human Genetics. The goal is to identify the genetic basis of non-syndromic craniosynostosis, cleft lip, cleft palate, and microtia, using next generation sequencing techniques. An extensive tissue and blood collection effort involving the patients affected by these conditions and their families is under way.
Other areas of active research include development of medical devices to allow early postnatal tissue molding for ear and cleft lip and palate deformities.
In addition, Dr. Gociman is involved in the development of resorbable custom scaffolds for correction of cranial bone defects and complex facial bone defects. Bioengineering and mechanical engineering graduate students are involved in these efforts through the Bench to Bedside and BioInnovate programs.
Lastly, Dr. Gociman is actively involved in clinical outcome research in multiple areas of Craniofacial Surgery and Pediatric Plastic Surgery. Particular interest is focused on minimally invasive craniectomies, distraction osteogenesis of the cranial vault and facial bones, and cleft lip and palate repair. A variety of projects are available to interested medical students, residents and fellows.
