Bio

Joni Hemond, MD is an Assistant Professor of General Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine and Primary Children´s Medical Center. She is also the Medical Director for the Teen Mother and Child Program/Teen Health Clinic which is located at the South Main Public Health Center. Dr. Hemond is a general pediatrician who sees infants, children, and adolescents for preventive health care and acute visits. Her special interests include childhood obesity, breastfeeding rates among teenagers, rapid repeat teen pregnancies, and resident education.

Academic Bio

Joni Hemond, MD, has been the Medical Director of the University of Utah’s Teen Mother and Child Program and Teen Health Clinic since 2007. Dr. Hemond received her undergraduate education at Boston College and her MD at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. After completing postgraduate training In Pediatrics at the University of Utah, she practiced for five years at a Federally Qualified Health Center in Atlantic City, NJ as part of a National Health Service Corps Scholarship.

Currently, Dr. Hemond is the Co-Director of the Adolescent Medicine Rotation for the Pediatric residency, and serves on the residency’s Intern Selection Committee. In 2010, she was chosen as a scholar for the University of Utah’s Academy of Pediatric Education and Leadership, a development program for faculty members who are interested in improving their educational and leadership skills. Her research interests include prevention of childhood obesity, breastfeeding rates in teenage mothers, and rapid repeat pregnancies in teenagers, and improving residency education.

Additionally, Dr. Hemond is a board member for the National Childhood Obesity Foundation and is a member of the Utah Department of Health’s Adolescent Health Network. She has also written for and received numerous grants supporting the patients in the Teen Mother and Child Program.
