  • CLINICAL PRACTICE

    Dr. Einerson is a physician and Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) expert at the University of Utah Health. He sees patients who have complex pregnancies or health conditions that can complicate pregnancy. His medical practice includes consultations with patients who already have an OBGYN or midwife, ultrasound consultations, prenatal care for complex pregnancies, deliveries of complex and routine pregnancies, and postpartum follow-up care. He sees patients for consultation and prenatal care in Salt Lake City at the University of Utah Medical Center and in Elko, Nevada at the University of Utah Specialty Clinic. He performs procedures and delivers pregnant patients at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah.

    Dr. Einerson takes care of patients with all types of high-risk pregnancy issues and specializes in placenta problems (including placenta accreta spectrum, placenta previa, and vasa previa), twin or triplet pregnancies, cervical insufficiency, and fetal genetic differences.

    Dr. Einerson performs a multitude of testing options and procedures in pregnancy including ultrasounds of the fetus and placenta starting in the first trimester, genetic screening, amniocentesis (collecting amniotic fluid) for genetic diagnosis, cerclage and other treatments to prevent preterm birth, vaginal birth, cesarean birth, vaginal delivery of complex situations (like twins and breech-presenting babies), external cephalic version (turning a breech or transverse baby to head-down) and treatments for placenta accreta spectrum including cesarean hysterectomy or conservative management.

    RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

    Dr. Einerson is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) at the University of Utah.

    Dr. Einerson’s research focuses on placenta accreta spectrum, severe maternal morbidity, quality improvement and patient safety, obstetric and postpartum hemorrhage, and cost-effectiveness. He has ongoing funding from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD, K23HD106009) to study alternative treatments for placenta accreta spectrum (PAS). He was the recipient of a career develop award through the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units (MFMU) Network to study the cost of care in patients undergoing induction of labor or expectant management at term in the ARRIVE trial. His research is supported by the University of Utah Vice President’s Clinical & Translational (VPCAT) Research Scholars Program and the Utah OBGYN Research Network (OGRN). His peer reviewed research has been published in Obstetrics & Gynecology, The American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology (AJOG), the British Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology (BJOG), and BMJ Open. In 2020, he received the Roy M. Pitkin Award on behalf of the Department for an outstanding research publication in Obstetrics & Gynecology (PMID 32541288).

    Dr. Einerson is a nationally recognized clinical expert in diagnosis and management of placenta accreta spectrum disorders (PAS). He is Director of the Utah Placenta Accreta Program at the University of Utah. As one of the busiest referral programs for PAS in the United States, the program provides internationally recognized, cutting-edge, interdisciplinary approaches to diagnosis, treatment, patient-centered support for those affected by PAS. He is a Board Member of the Pan American Society for Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS2) and serves as that society’s Publications Committee Chair. In 2020 and 2021 he was co-director of the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM) Accreta Scientific Forum. In October 2022, he and the University of Utah hosted the 4th Annual National meeting of PAS2 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Given this expertise, he has been a speaker, lecturer, and podcast guest to discuss PAS for regional and national events including SMFM Post-Graduate Courses and Accreta Scientific Forum, the PAS2 National Conference, the Vanderbilt High Risk Pregnancy Seminar, the Park City Postgraduate OBGYN Course, the Healthful Woman Podcast, and CREOGs Over Coffee Podcast.

    Dr. Einerson is an engaged leader, award-winning educator, and effective mentor. He was a member of the SMFM Patient Safety and Quality Committee from 2016 to 2022, where he authored the SMFM Placenta Accreta Spectrum Safety Checklist. Locally, he is the Medical Director of Obstetric Emergency Services (OBES) at University of Utah Health Medical Center, Chair of the University of Utah Severe Maternal Morbidity Review Committee, and Member of the University Transfusion Committee. He is Associate Program Director (Research) for the University of Utah Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Fellowship. A devoted medical educator, he has received eight teaching awards from medical students and residents, including twice being named the recipient of the National Faculty Award from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics & Gynecology (CREOG) for promoting high standards of residency education in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.

    Dr. Einerson received his medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 2011. He completed a Masters in Public Health in Health Care Leadership in 2010 from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He completed a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 2015. Thereafter, he has been at the University of Utah, first for Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship (completed in 2018) and now as faculty in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. He is a Fellow of The American Congress of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (FACOG) and is board certified in both Obstetrics & Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
