Bile Duct Cancer Basics
Bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma) occurs when malignant (cancerous) cells form in the bile ducts—the network of tubes connecting the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and small intestine. It is a rare but serious cancer that can occur at various locations along the bile duct.
These are warning signs of bile duct cancer:
- Jaundice (yellowing skin or eyes)
- Dark urine
- Clay-colored stools
- Abdominal pain
- Fever
- Itchy skin
- Nausea or vomiting
- Unexplained weight loss
Many of these symptoms can be caused by other conditions. If you are experiencing any concerning signs, please schedule a screening today.
These are risk factors for bile duct cancer:
- Primary sclerosing cholangitis
- Chronic ulcerative colitis
- Bile duct cysts
- Infection with certain liver fluke parasites (in endemic regions)
- Genetic predisposition or family history
Understand your risk. Schedule a genetic counseling session today.
Diagnosis
Doctors may use these methods to diagnose bile duct cancer:
- Physical exam and medical history
- Laboratory tests (liver function tests, tumor markers)
- Ultrasound imaging
- Advanced imaging (CT, MRI, PET)
- Biopsy of suspicious tissue for microscopic evaluation
Staging
Doctors evaluate these factors to determine staging:
- Tumor size
- Lymph node involvement
- Distant metastasis
Bile duct cancers are categorized from stage 0 (in situ) through stage 4 (metastatic).
Some tumors are described as resectable (amenable to surgical removal) or unresectable (cannot be fully removed).
