Endometrial Cancer Basics

Endometrial cancer arises from malignant or cancerous cells forming in the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus.

These are warning signs of endometrial cancer:

    • Vaginal bleeding after menopause
    • Vaginal bleeding or discharge not related to menstrual cycles
    • Painful or difficult urination
    • Pain during sexual intercourse
    • Pelvic pain

Many of these symptoms can be caused by other conditions. If you are experiencing any concerning signs, schedule a screening today.

These are risk factors for endometrial cancer:

    • Advancing age
    • Personal history of endometrial disease
    • Family history of uterine or Lynch syndrome-associated cancers
    • No history of childbirth
    • Metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovarian syndrome
    • Early menstruation or late menopause
    • Obesity
    • Genetic syndromes such as Lynch syndrome, an inherited condition that increases the risk of developing cancers

Understand your risk. Schedule a genetic counseling session today.

    Diagnosis

Doctors may use the following to diagnose endometrial cancer:

    • Endometrial biopsy to obtain tissue for pathology
    • Transvaginal ultrasound to visualize the uterine lining
    • Physical exam and medical history, including symptom review
    • Laboratory tests like blood work, urinalysis, and biopsy as appropriate
    • Imaging like computed tomography (CT), in which a computer controls the motion of the X-ray, and magnetic resonance imaging
    • (MRI), that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to assess spread beyond uterus

    Staging

Staging helps determine how far cancer has spread. These are stages of endometrial cancer:

    • Stage 1 (1A/1B): Cancer is confined to the uterus (various depths of invasion).
    • Stage 2: Cancer has spread into cervical tissues but not beyond the uterus.
    • Stage 3 (3A/3B/3C):There is spread within the pelvis, local extension, or lymph node involvement.
    • Stage 4 (4A/4B): There is spread to bladder, bowel, or distant organs, like the lungs and liver.

When cancer spreads or metastasizes to other organs, the disease remains classified as endometrial cancer in the new location.
