Vaginal Cancer Basics
Vaginal cancer occurs when malignant cells develop in the tissues lining the vagina.
These are the warning signs of vaginal cancer:
- Bleeding or discharge not associated with menstrual periods
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Pelvic pain
- A noticeable lump or mass in the vagina
- Pain or burning with urination
- Constipation or changes in bowel habits
Many of these symptoms can be caused by other conditions. If you are experiencing any concerning signs, please schedule a screening today.
These are risk factors for vaginal cancer:
- Aging (increased risk with older age)
- HPV, or human papillomavirus, infection
- Personal history of vaginal or cervical abnormalities or cancer
- In utero exposure to the synthetic hormone diethylstilbestrol, known as DES
- Family history of vaginal cancer or other gynecologic cancers
Understand your risk. Schedule a genetic counseling session today.
Doctors may use these tests to diagnose vaginal cancer:
- Pelvic examination evaluating the vagina, cervix, uterus, and adjacent organs
- Pap test or cytology sampling of vaginal and cervical cells
- Biopsy or colposcopy, a procedure to examine the cervix, to sample tissue for pathological analysis
- Medical history and physical exam to guide further evaluation
When a person is diagnosed with cancer, concerns about treatments and side effects, hospital stays, and medical bills are common. Huntsman Cancer Institute offers many ways to support patients, caregivers, and loved ones.
Vaginal cancer is staged based on how far it has invaded local tissues and whether it has spread to other organs:
- Stage 1: Cancer is limited to the vaginal wall.
- Stage 2: Cancer has spread through the vaginal wall but not to the pelvic wall.
- Stage 3: Cancer has reached the pelvic wall.
- Stage 4 (4A/4B): Cancer has invaded nearby organs, such as the bladder or rectum, or distant sites like the lungs and bones.
When vaginal cancer spreads, the metastatic cells remain vaginal cancer cells in the new location, not a separate cancer type.
