Paranasal Sinus & Nasal Cavity Cancer Basics
Paranasal sinus and nasal cavity cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancerous) cells form in tissues of the nose and surrounding sinuses.
These are warning signs of paranasal sinus cancer:
- A nonhealing lump or sore inside the nose
- A lump on face or roof of the mouth
- Facial numbness or tingling
- Eye symptoms (swelling, double vision, asymmetry)
- Unresolved sinus blockage or pressure
- Headaches or sinus pain
- Upper tooth pain, loose teeth, denture misfit
- Ear pain or pressure
- Persistent nasal drainage or bleeding
Many of these symptoms can be caused by other conditions. If you are experiencing any concerning signs, schedule a screening today.
These are risk factors for paranasal sinus cancer:
- Frequent exposure to chemicals or dust
- Smoking
- HPV infection

Diagnosis
Doctors may use the following to diagnose paranasal sinus cancer:
- Biopsy (tissue sampling)
- Physical exam and health history
- Imaging (CT, MRI, PET)
Staging
- Stage 0: Abnormal cells are in the lining of sinus, nasal cavity, or ethmoid sinus.
- Stage 1: Cancer is limited to one mucosal area.
- Stage 2: Cancer has spread to bone around structures (roof of mouth, nose), or two areas of nasal/ethmoid cavity.
- Stage 3: Cancer has extended to skull base, eye orbit, soft tissues, or one lymph node < 3 cm.
- Stage 4 (4A, 4B, 4C): Cancer has spread to adjacent structures, there are multiple nodes, or there is distant metastasis.
