What Is a DEXA Scan?
Bone density scanning, also called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA or bone densitometry) is a form of X-ray technology that measures bone loss. A DEXA scan is the standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD). It is also the most accurate method to:
- measure the risk of bone fractures and
- detect osteoporosis.
The test is a painless medical procedure done by exposing a part of the body to a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the inside of the body (X-ray). When we perform these X-rays, we use the latest digital radiography technology to produce highest-quality studies at the lowest possible radiation dose.

What to Expect at Your DEXA Scan
When you arrive, you will be asked a few questions about your health and medications to help us make sure we are billing your insurance properly. You may be asked to change into an exam gown if you are wearing any zippers, buttons, or hooks in the areas we will be scanning. You will be asked to lie on your back on a padded table for about 5–10 minutes.
