How to Boost Your Child’s Immune System

May 26, 2020

Despite what you may read on the Internet, viruses—including coronavirus—are not impacted by vitamin levels. So how can you best improve your child’s immune system? Pediatirician Dr. Cindy Gellner explains why exercise, diet, and sunshine are the best ways to keep your child strong against any virus.

COVID is scary. Parents are rightly worried for their children in terms of their health and safety. I've been asked a few times, "What vitamins can I give my child to prevent them from getting COVID?" Unfortunately, there is no proof yet that vitamins can help.

This is a virus, and viruses don't care about vitamin levels. While giving additional vitamins and supplements on top of what your child normally would need has not been scientifically proven to help boost immunity to viruses, it is certainly important to keep giving your children healthy foods and make sure they get lots of sunshine and exercise to keep their immune systems primed and ready to fight off COVID or any of the other viruses we're still seeing going around.

If you have any specific questions about how to help maintain your child's health during this COVID crisis, ask your pediatrician. The bottom line for kids and adults alike is to stay safe, eat healthy, try to get lots of physical activity as much as possible, and stay in communication with friends and family over whatever digital media avenue you feel most comfortable with. All of these will help us all get through this.
