Our dedicated team of professionals is passionate about helping patients with depression and other mental health issues. We offer ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP), a cutting-edge treatment that combines the therapeutic potential of ketamine with personalized psychotherapy. Our experienced providers and supportive environment will provide you with the highest quality care throughout your treatment journey.

How Does Ketamine Work for Depression?

Ketamine is an FDA-approved anesthetic medication for its use in reducing pain during medical procedures. While its use in mental health treatment is not yet FDA-approved, ketamine has shown promising results in treating depression, especially for patients who haven't responded to traditional treatments. Ketamine helps foster positive mood changes and nurture healthy brain connections by influencing a brain chemical called glutamate. This can help patients break free from "stuck" thinking patterns and find new perspectives and ways to cope with life's challenges.

Who Is a Candidate for Ketamine Treatment?

Ketamine may be an effective treatment for patients who are:

  • clinically depressed and have not benefited from antidepressant medications, or
  • experiencing severe distress due to a life-altering major illness, such as cancer.

To begin the process, you will meet with a psychiatrist at HMHI Park City Behavioral Health Clinic, who will conduct a full medical and psychiatric evaluation to determine your eligibility for treatment.

What to Expect During Your KAP Sessions

After your evaluation, we will create a personalized treatment plan consisting of psychotherapy (talk therapy) visits and ketamine dosing sessions. The number of KAP (ketamine-assisted psychotherapy) sessions needed varies from person to person. We typically recommend at least three sessions to maximize the benefits of the treatment. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your specific needs and therapeutic goals.

Ketamine Dosing Session

We will administer a dose of ketamine through an injection in your arm muscle or under your tongue. You will wear an eye mask and listen to music through headphones as you enter a dreamlike state. You will be supported at all times by a therapist who will be present with you. This session lasts for one hour. Dosing sessions are followed by integration therapy sessions to help you make sense of your ketamine experience and how it can help you move forward.

Psychotherapy Session

Each psychotherapy (talk therapy) session helps you explore and process your thoughts and emotions during and after the ketamine session. The goal is to achieve lasting benefits and make significant life changes. This session takes 1.5-2 hours.

Our clinic also offers app-based programming for convenient access to therapy exercises, meditations, and progress tracking. This is designed to enhance your treatment experience and support your mental health journey.

Ketamine Therapy Side Effects

During your ketamine treatment, you may experience an altered mental status. Some patients have also reported:

  • blurred vision,
  • slurred speech,
  • mental confusion,
  • elevated blood pressure,
  • nausea, or
  • vomiting.

These effects typically resolve quickly after your treatment is completed.

Can I Drive After Ketamine Treatment?

We strongly advise against driving or operating machinery, caring for others, or signing important documents on the day of your treatment. Please arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day.

Ketamine for Depression: Success Rate

Early studies have shown that ketamine therapy can be effective in up to 60-70% of patients with clinical depression who have not responded to traditional treatments.

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Cost

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is only partially covered by insurance. Your consultation and psychotherapy visits will usually be billed to insurance.
