Cancer Research North, officially named the Jon M. Huntsman Cancer Research Center, has 230,000 square feet for outpatient services, laboratory space, administrative offices, and a restaurant. The building opened in 1999.
Cancer Research North is connected to the neighboring buildings by skybridges, which symbolize Huntsman Cancer Institute's mission to integrate research with clinical care, enhancing cancer treatment standards. As CEO Mary Beckerle, PhD, states, “Our patients see the science going on, and that gives them hope. Our scientists see our patients and their families, and that gives them motivation.”
The addition of the proton therapy center in 2021 has further improved patient care by eliminating the need for long-distance travel for treatment.

- Infusion centers at the Huntsman Cancer Institute Hospital and Community Clinics
- Outpatient BMT (Clinic 2E) and Hematology (Clinic 2D) waiting rooms, hallways, and exam rooms
- Huntsman Acute Care (HAC), when entering patient exam rooms
- Inpatient BMT, Hematology, and Huntsman Intensive Care (HICU) units, when entering patient rooms
- With any patient who has identified respiratory precautions
- If a patient or visitor wears a mask and requests the same of the care team during the interaction
Please check with your clinic before your visit for the most up-to-date information or view the University of Utah Health Masking and Visiting Policy.
Masks are not required in research buildings.
