American Cancer Society Awards Huntsman Cancer Institute $300,000 to Improve Care for Rural Patients

Huntsman Cancer Institute has been awarded $300,000 from the American Cancer Society. This grant will expand Huntsman Cancer Institute’s patient navigation program to rural areas throughout Utah, Montana, and Wyoming. Patient navigators provide information about what to expect, coordinate appointments, connect to resources, and facilitate communication between the patient and health care team.

St. Peter’s Health Announces Affiliation

St. Peter's Health announced the decision to affiliate with Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah and bring a higher level of cancer care to the Helena community. The affiliation with HCI enables patients undergoing cancer and hematology care at St. Peter's Health in Helena, Montana to access a broader variety of treatment options along with top cancer experts at HCI.

Helping Wyoming’s Rural Communities Get Cancer Care and Resources

Before Sweetwater County, Wyoming, had its own cancer center, patients had to travel to Salt Lake or farther for treatment, says Tasha Harris, director of the Sweetwater Regional Cancer Center. As a member of HCI’s Community Advisory Board, she is able to connect people in rural Wyoming communities with even more cancer resources, prevention information, and screenings.

Extending Care through the Mountain West

Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah extends cancer care through the Mountain West with its affiliate hospitals. These hospitals work with HCI experts to give world-class cancer care to patients near their homes. HCI affiliate hospitals provide specialty cancer services to their patients. For some procedures, patients travel to Salt Lake City. Then they get follow-up care at the affiliate hospital near their home.
