Scientists from the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah are sharing their latest research at the upcoming annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the world’s largest organization of eye and vision researchers.
They will discuss innovative work ranging from an artificial intelligence system aimed at improving care for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) to breakthroughs in a push to create better glaucoma treatments.
With this year’s meeting to be held in Salt Lake City, the Moran Eye Center will host a reception for ARVO scientists at its University of Utah campus location. Moran supports more than 20 research labs and centers and has more than 500 employees working to achieve a collective vision that no person with a blinding condition, eye disease, or visual impairment should be without hope, understanding, and treatment.
The ARVO Foundation will honor retina specialist Paul S. Bernstein, MD, PhD, Moran’s vice-chair for clinical and basic science research, for his efforts in bringing vitreoretinal services to the developing world and his dedicated service to the organization. Bernstein works with Moran’s Global Outreach Division to train retina specialists in low-resource countries, most recently in Ethiopia. His laboratory focuses on the biochemistry and biophysics of nutritional interventions against inherited and acquired ocular disorders such as AMD and macular telangiectasia type 2.
In total, 31 Moran Eye Center clinical and/or research faculty members will share their findings at the annual meeting. They will be joined by Moran fellows, residents, and postdoctoral researchers.
