Interview Transcript

Announcer: The Health Minute, produced by University of Utah Health.

Interviewer: You exercise, you eat well, but psychiatrist Dr. Michael McIntosh, is there something I can do to stay mentally fit?

Dr. McIntosh: Plan positive outreach. Part of mental well-being is engineering small, but frequent meaningful experiences. Consider the people you are close to using meditation or prayer. Consider people one by one. An idea or inspiration may come to you.

Who might you interact with that day? Is there one interaction in particular that you might enhance through a positive comment or kind deed? Could you reach out by phone, or email, or text? Is there some small act of service you can give today?

When we serve others we enhance our own mental health. Our sense of self-worth increases. Our life becomes more meaningful. We have more energy and more to look forward to. Plan positive outreach.
