Interviewer: Neuroscience is looking at a new way of thinking about addiction which then would guide how we would treat addiction. Dr. Eric Garland, tell me more.

Dr. Garland: The old approach to treating addiction involved getting rid of negative addictive habits. That approach can be helpful, but it leaves a void. Modern neuroscience suggests that we may be able to fill this void by teaching people to become mindful of the positive meaningful aspects of their lives and building new habits centered on increasing those naturally rewarding experiences.

Interviewer: So is this something I can do on my own?

Dr. Garland: Maybe if it was a minor addiction like addiction to social media. In that case, a person could put down their cell phone, go sit outside and focus their attention on the beauty of the sunset and the world around them. But, if it was something more serious, I'd strongly suggest that they go get professional help from a therapist, preferably somebody who's trained in one of these new mindfulness-based approaches.
