Announcer: The Health Minute, produced by University of Utah Health.

Interviewer: If you haven't gotten your flu shot yet, you should do that. Dr. Julie Day, what are the advantages of getting the flu shot?

Dr. Day: Number one, it can protect you from getting the flu, which is no fun. Plus, you're also protecting your family and coworkers. Number two, if you get the flu shot, there is still a small chance you might get the flu. But the shot can reduce the severity of symptoms, and it can help prevent serious complications, which can result in hospitalization.

Number three, even if the flu strain going around isn't included in the flu shot that's available, antibodies made in response to one flu virus can offer protection against other related viruses. Bottom line is the flu shot is the best protection against the flu, so I recommend that everyone above the age of six months go out today and get your flu shot.
