Dr. Jones: It's very important to have a primary care physician. So basically a primary care physician is a family physician, an internist, or pediatrician. And the reason it's important to have one is because first of all if you have chronic medical problems they help you manage those, so they can help you take care of the medications and the treatments and the workup of what you need. But they also help to integrate and coordinate information from any specialist physicians that you may see.

Now if you don't have chronic medical problems and you're healthy, they also guide you to help keep you as healthy as possible to hopefully prevent those chronic conditions. And so it's important to find a physician that's going to help you with all those things. So the question is how do you find a primary care physician that fits your needs?

Number one, ask around with your family and friends. Definitely word-of-mouth is the best gauge and can help you determine the philosophies of the physician to see if it fits you, but also their capabilities to see if they are able to care for your diabetes for example or if you are looking for physician that will care for both you as well as your children going to a family physician.

Number two, go online but be careful. So lots of websites exist that rate physicians such as healthgrades.com, ratemds.com, Angie's List. Now, the websites are based completely on patient opinion and only if those patients know about the site. So doctors don't like this because it creates what we call a selection bias. Those that are most likely to post something tend to be those that are most frustrated with the care they receive. So if you're going to look at those sites, be aware of that and follow with caution.

A couple of other things online that may be helpful, specific to the University of Utah. University of Utah healthcare was the first academic medical center in the country to post their patient satisfaction results, so every patient that is seen by a University provider is asked to do a survey and those results are then posted online so this way it's a little more comprehensive. It provides a broader picture than some of the other websites that post patient feedback on physicians.

Another thing the University provides is a profile page for each physician. You can search by specialty to find a primary care physician. It gives some basic info on the physician and their clinical interests. Now obviously not every healthcare system does this and so if you're going to be going to someone outside of the University, another way to try to find some information about primary care physicians is on social media whether it's Twitter, or Facebook clinic page, or a blog, or website this helps you get an idea of the personality, interests of the physician. However it may also reflect more personal things instead of professional, so this is another case in which it may be helpful but you also want to follow with caution

Number three, if you have a physician in mind, it's okay to call the office and ask a few brief questions before scheduling with keep them. Keep it simple and short but if you're looking for a certain thing that that you need from a primary care physician, you can ask either the front desk or the physicians medical assistant to see if that physician is going to meet your needs. So not only is it important to have a primary care physician, but you need one that fits you and your needs and the needs of your family.
