Free Group Fitness Classes

The group fitness classes are open to Huntsman Cancer Institute patients, staff, caregivers, and University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics staff and faculty. View the class schedule.

Sign up for Live Virtual Classes

  1. Sign up for the class on the Smartsheet Sign-In.
  2. Complete the Liability Waiver (required once per year).
  3. Download Zoom to a desktop or mobile device.
  4. Join the Zoom meeting to access the classes.

About Fitness and Exercise

Exercise has many benefits for people affected by cancer. Exercise is the top recommendation to help reduce cancer-related fatigue. It has been shown to reduce cancer recurrence rates. It can also help with the following:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Body image and self-esteem
  • Good sleep
  • Immune system function
  • Inflammation
  • Pain management
  • Weight management

Services and classes are low cost and many are free. Group exercise events and classes are also open to loved ones and Huntsman Cancer Institute staff.

Meet our Team

POWER Program

Provider assists patient while doing physical therapy exercises

The Personal Optimism with Exercise Recovery (POWER) fitness program provides a personalized exercise plan for cancer patients based on diagnosis, treatment type and phase, and fitness goals. It includes the following:

  • Medical and physical assessment by a physician
  • Personalized exercise plan
  • Twice weekly exercise sessions with a certified cancer exercise specialist
  • Group circuit training classes
  • Weight management

All sessions are approximately 60 minutes in length. We also offer telemedicine appointments.

Cost

The medical and physical assessment by a physician is billed to your insurance. All other POWER program visits are self-pay, including follow-up sessions with an exercise specialist. Cost ranges from $8.33 to $13.33 per session. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. Please contact the Financial Advocate Team at University of Utah Health Care for more information.

Group Classes

Class Descriptions

Core and Stretch. Learn to strengthen your core with proper form and technique to improve posture and prevent back pain. Target the abdominals, back, and hips with a safe and challenging workout.

Minding Motion™. This is a fun and energizing movement program done from a chair and standing to help people of all levels reconnect with their bodies.

Pilates Mat. Similar to yoga, Pilates mat focuses on basic exercises to improve core stability, strength, balance, flexibility, and posture. Pilates mat helps you be aware of breath, practice spinal alignment, and use core muscles.

Resistance Training. Target all of the major muscle groups using dumbbells, mats, resistance bands, and balls. Learn exercises that help strengthen bones and muscles. Regular resistance training increases metabolism to help maintain a healthy weight.

Step into Life. This is a therapeutic dance and movement experience for the mind, body, and spirit led by instructors from the University of Utah Tanner Dance Program.

T’ai Chi/Qigong. This slow, flowing energy movement improves strength, mindfulness, relaxation, immune system, blood circulation, balance, and neuropathy while exploring mindful breathing.

Yoga. This is a non-aerobic exercise of precise posture, breathing exercises, and meditation to improve mood and sense of well-being to increase flexibility, balance, range of motion, and muscle tone.

Yoga/Qigong. This non-aerobic exercise focuses on posture, breathing, and meditation combined with slow, flowing energy movement to improve strength, mindfulness, and relaxation.

Yogalates. This is a blend of yoga and Pilates that combines mind/body practices as well as stretching, strength training, conditioning, and dynamic movement.

Zumba®. This is a fusion of Latin and international music and dance themes designed for all levels of fitness. Ditch the workout and join the party!

Participation in Physical Activity & Movement programs and classes is free. Many are also open to loved ones and staff.
